Giving Back to Our Communities

Our commitment to giving back is as strong and varied as the needs of our communities. We are incredibly proud not only of the community service we do as a firm but also of the many ways our attorneys and staff give back personally. The firm stands ready to support these projects—whether they are nonprofit board positions, local service opportunities, or causes near and dear to our hearts. Here are a few examples:

Inspiring Good Works Nationally

Setting a Moral Compass: The Robert D. Reif Fellowship

Known for his unwavering moral compass and high ethical standards, partner Robert D. Reif left a legacy of leadership when he passed away in 2012. In Bob’s honor, we partnered with the American University Washington College of Law to establish the Robert D. Reif Fellowship. Reif Fellows research issues of legal ethics and values, including sexual harassment, substance abuse, and ethical treatment of immigrants in the legal community, keeping Bob’s convictions relevant for next-generation lawyers.

Fulfilling a promise: The Amanda Rose Laura Foundation

The Amanda Rose Laura Foundation honors the life of Amanda Laura, the daughter of our colleague Anthony Laura and his wife, Rosemary. Her death in 2017, at age 25, was a loss felt across the firm. Amanda was passionate about closing the educational gap for underprivileged students, serving as a Teach for America educator in Chicago, and winning a Fulbright grant to teach disadvantaged children in Madrid. To carry on Amanda’s commitment, the nonprofit foundation advances educational opportunities for underserved students in the United States.

Mobilizing local resources to help homeless families: Family Promise

Family Promise is a national charity that creates innovative solutions to address the unique challenges low-income families face that can lead to homelessness and connects homeless families with the resources they need to be able to find housing and food. In December 2022, as we announced in our holiday card sent to clients, colleagues, and friends, Epstein Becker Green made a monetary donation to Family Promise.

Spreading joy to struggling families: Salvation Army Angel Tree Program

The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program is a personalized holiday assistance program in which an individual or group sponsor purchases new clothing and toys for a deserving child (or “Angel”) in need. Last year, the Salvation Army, with the help of numerous generous sponsors, provided holiday gifts to more than 12,000 kids in and near the nation’s capital. For many of these children, the gifts they receive through the Angel Tree Program will be the only ones they open on Christmas morning. In 2022, Epstein Becker Green employees in the Washington, DC, and Nashville offices participated in this program and adopted a total of 45 “Angels.”

Inspiring Good Works Locally

We take pride in serving as community leaders and volunteers in various local civic organizations and schools, creating a positive change in the communities where we live and work. Below are a few highlights of our local community endeavors:

Reimaging early learning: SproutFive

SproutFive believes that every child deserves a holistic, high-quality early education. Based in Ohio, this nonprofit’s goal is to ensure that all children are given the opportunity to thrive during their first five years of life. In 2022, Epstein Becker Green employees in the Columbus and Cincinnati offices spent one Saturday painting offices at SproutFive, and those who participated said it was such a heartwarming experience knowing that they were contributing to an organization that offers a wide range of services to families within the community through its Family Resource Center.

Inspiring low-income students to achieve at high levels: Langley Elementary School

Langley Elemental School, a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education school in an underserved area of Washington, DC, provides opportunities for preschool-through-fifth-grade students to learn important 21st-century skills. In 2022, as we have done many years previously, Epstein Becker Green partnered with Langley to support fundraising activities with and on behalf of the school.

Lifting the spirits of isolated seniors: GlamourGals

GlamourGals is an organization that works to reduce elder isolation and keep seniors feeling loved. The group organizes teen volunteers into GlamourGals chapters in their high schools and colleges and connects them with local senior homes. The volunteers provide companionship, conversation, and beauty makeovers to isolated seniors. In December 2022, Epstein Becker Green attorneys and staff in the New York office participated in the third annual GlamourGals “My Dear Friend” holiday card writing campaign, creating more than 200 artistic holiday note cards for distribution to isolated seniors.
